Reintroduction Spider Monkeys Suriname

Guiana Spider Monkeys (Ateles paniscus) are hunted and illegally kept as pets widespread throughout Suriname. Primates are not suitable pets for many reasons and the ex pets are often offered to Paramaribo Zoo. The zoo has little space left for sheltering. For this reasons Paramaribo Zoo, Vets World Wild and Conservation International Suriname pilot reintroducing 5 ex pet spider monkeys in a suitable forest to open options for more ex pets spider monkeys and finally end spider monkeys being kept as pets in Suriname. The ex pet Guiana Spider Monkeys were sedated in Paramaribo Zoo for a clinical examination and blood sampling. They were translocated and reintroduced in the wild.

Currently we are performing post-release monitoring. The released monkeys are now completely independent for food. During this phase we monitor their behaviour and study their home range and habitat use. Do you want to help us to collect valuable information and proceed on the monitoring phase, feel free to give a donation. For more information click here.
